Trade shows – you know what they are, a major element in business development and networking. Whether they be community events sponsored by the local chamber of commerce, or national events sponsored by a national professional or trade association; any business attempting to gain new customers is going to participate in some sort of trade show(s) at some point in time.

Some companies feel it’s imperative to have a booth, others want to attend the educational seminars (or present at them), still others prefer to ‘make the rounds’ and do extensive networking. One thing they all have in common is cost, including: booth rental, display development, staffing, travel costs such as hotel & airlines, and all the materials to distribute – frankly the list can be endless. According to Tradeshow Week magazine, mid-to-large size companies spend about $550,000 every year participating in the standard physical trade shows, with an average cost per show sometimes as high as $100,000 for the larger companies.  Small entrepreneurial companies can easily spend in the range of $50,000 per year.

And recent studies have shown – not necessarily productive enough to be worth all that time and expense, particularly in today’s economy.

So what options does a small business have? It turns out, more than you might think! Welcome to the world of VIRTUAL TRADE SHOWS.

I’ve noticed an interesting trend in my research and review of new media technologies now available to aid small businesses in developing their brands.  The trend is that more than ever before the developers of these technologies inherently understand that their ability to expand use of their product relies on that product’s ability to interact/inter-connect with other new media technologies.  Examples of this include:

  • YouTube providing the capability of downloading videos directly to Facebook
  • WordPress and other blog technologies enabling Twitter to feed into their platforms
  • Facebook and Twitter entries being made from mobile phones
  • Twitter and blog postings feeding directly into Friendfeed
  • many, many additional examples in the wide variety of new media being used today.

And now there is a new example, BlogTalkRadio being accessible via mobile phone.

vice president of mobile service and strategy For those of you unfamiliar with BlogTalkRadio, it’s a free, Web-based radio talk show platform that lets any user with a phone and a computer host a live, interactive radio show, with no downloads or extra equipment needed.  Upon completion of the live broadcast, each show is automatically archived as a podcast.  Many small businesses utilize BlogTalkRadio as a way of enhancing their brand and expanding consumer awareness of their companies.  Click HERE to listen to broadcasts from our show, ‘Strategic Growth Concepts for Small Business’ as an example.

A recent story in Mobile Marketer discusses BlogTalkRadio’s entre’ into the mobile environment; what’s possible now and where they are taking their platform.  Read the complete article HERE; small businesses will likely find this of great interest as an additional way of reaching current and prospective consumers.

As part of our efforts to keep you informed of all things related to marketing with new technology, we wanted to bring you up-to-speed on some of the latest uses of Mobile Marketing that we’ve recently learned about.  Our goal is that you begin to have some understanding of the wide variety of uses that mobile marketing can play in your firm’s overall marketing strategy.

  • One of the recent uses we’ve learned about is a cross-marketing program being employed by CBS to promote their new TV series, ‘Harper’s Island’.  Learn the details HERE.
  • Another program is currently being run in England by Kellogg’s.  In this program, the company provides recipes using its cereal products on the boxes.  Customers are urged to send in videos of themselves making and eating the products in order to enter a contest giving them a chance to win participation in a TV or print commercial.  Learn the details HERE.
  • A third user of mobile marketing is the giant shared mail company, ValPak.  The company has recently added mobile coupons to its arsenal of products, which has resulted in the download of 140,000 coupons by consumers.  Learn more about the company’s program HERE.
  • BMW in Germany implemented a mobile marketing campaign with new customers before the start of winter weather.  Their recent customers received a personalized message with a winter tire recommendation that was specific to their vehicle.  BMW reports a 30% conversion rate for the campaign.  Learn more about their program HERE.
  • Last but not least, Procter & Gamble’s Charmin brand is sponsorsing a website and iPhone application that helps consumers find the cleanest public restrooms worldwide.  Get more information HERE.

As you can see by these varied examples, the uses of mobile marketing are many and diverse.  Please check back to this blog often to see more examples, and don’t forget to join us on Tuesday, April 14th at 2:30 p.m. EDT for our BlogTalkRadio show, ‘Strategic Growth Concepts for Small Business’, where the topic discussed by this week’s panel of industry experts will be “Mobile Marketing – What is it and how can it be used to grow your business?”  Call-in information can be found at http://blogtalkradio.com/strategicgrowthconcepts .
